Can optometrist do surgery ?

 Optometrist is a primary eye care provider , the main role of optometrist is  correction of vision problem with spectacle and contact lens. Optometrist can not do any kind of eye surgery and not provide medical prescription to the patient except some basic drugs. Optician and optometrist not perfom cataract surgery, laser surgery even not any eye surgery becouse he is not qualify to operate the eye.

Optometrist not perfom even minor eye surgery like chalazion, style, external hordeolum and internal hordeolum.

He examine and treated many eye Diseases and correction of refractive error for better vision (6/6). 

Optometrist can not do cataract surgery, laser surgery, glaucoma surgery and lasik surgery.

Optometrist also perform eye examination before cataract surgery and after surgery (post operative)

What surgeries can an optometrist perform?

Optometrist cannot perform any type of eye surgery but some state optometrist perform eye surgeries. 

Optometrist assist to ophthalmologist for different eye surgeries like cataract surgeries, phaco eye surgery, glaucoma surgeries, trabeculectomy, goniotomy, surgical iridectomy, surgery for deviation of eye (squint). 

Optometrist perform many pre-operative procedure like below except surgery.

1. Eye Examination on slit lamp.

2. Measure visual acuity before cataract surgery with snellen chart.

3. Measure intraocular pressure with applanation and schiortz tonometer.

4. Sac syringing : test for examine and detect Dacryocystities.

5. Preoperative examination of pupillary reaction for either RAPD positive or negative.

6. Corneal curvature measure with the help of keratometer for calculate power.

7. Measure axial length with the help of a scan calculate IOL power.

Above all thing performed by optometrist so optometrist is a very important role in ophthalmology. Ophthalmology field is never complete without optometry. 

Patient eye treatment start with optometrist and end with optometrist.

Is an optometrist a surgeo9n ?

Optometrist is a not a surgeon, he is primary eye health care person. Optometrist not perform the eye surgery but except  surgery and medical treatment he can correct all type of refractive error and provide contact lens and spectacle lenses. 

He also perform many eye check procedures for diagnosis of various eye disease, under the guidence of ophthalmologist optometrist can prescribe many drugs.
