What is Epilation of eyelashes ?
● Epilation is ophthalmic procedure in which misdirected cilia or eyelashes is remove with the help of Epilation forcep due to its rubbing on the surface of cornea.
● It is very easy and OPD procedure.
Indications of Epilation
● To remove inward turning misdirected cilia or eyelashes (Trichiasis)
● To prevent corneal abrasion
What care to be taken
● Wash your hands
● Position the patient comfortably with his/her head supported
● Ensure good lighting
● Always explain to the patient what you are going to do.
Requirements
● Magnification (magnifying loupe)
● Torch or flashlight
● Gauze swabs
● Local anaesthetic eye drops
● Epilation forceps
Preparation
● Explain the procedure and advise the patient that it will cause some very brief discomfort
● The patient and examiner should be positioned appropriately.
Procedures of Epilation
● Instil the local anaesthetic eye drops
● Using magnification, identify the eyelashes which need epilatin.
● Ask the patient to look up and down, fix his/her gaze.
● With an index finger hold down the lower eyelid
With the epilation forceps in the other hand, hold the eyelash close to its base and pull gently forward to pluck it out
● Repeat until all misdirected lashes are epilated
● When all misdirected lashes have been removed and advise him/her not to rub the eye.
