What is Rubella ( German measles ) ?

Rubella is a contagious viral infection preventable by vaccine and is best known for its distinctive red rash. 

The disease can spread through direct contact with the saliva or mucus of an infected person or through the air by respiratory droplets produced from coughing or sneezing.

Cataracts: The most common eye symptom of Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) is cataracts,  most of which are nuclear cataracts.

Microphthalmia: Microphthalmia is another common eye symptom of CRS.

Pigmentary retinopathy: Pigmentary retinopathy is a common eye symptom of CRS.

Strabismus: Strabismus is an eye symptom of CRS. 

Glaucoma: Glaucoma is an eye symptom of CRS. 

Iris Hypoplasia: Iris hypoplasia is a common ocular manifestation of CRS. 

Lentic coloboma: Isolated lenticular colobomas can occur in  CRS. 

CRS is the most common cause of vaccine-preventable birth defects. 

Other symptoms of CRS include hearing loss, heart defects, neurological changes, bone disease, low blood counts, thyroid disease, enlarged liver and spleen, and type 1 diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends  measles vaccination for children over 1 year of age  who do not have immunity to measles and for adults born after 1957.
