What is Iris Prolapse ?
A condition where a portion of the iris (the colored part of the eye) protrudes through a wound in the eye.
Diagnosis of Iris Prolapse
• Slit-lamp examination: A detailed examination of the eye using a specialized microscope.
• Visual acuity test: To assess the extent of vision loss.
• Other tests: May include tonometry (to measure eye pressure) and gonioscopy (to examine the angle of the anterior chamber).
Treatment of Iris Prolapse
• Prompt surgical intervention: To prevent complications such as infection and glaucoma.
• Surgical procedures:
• Iris repositioning
• Iris repair
• In some cases, removal of the prolapsed portion of the iris may be necessary.
Complications of Iris Prolapse
• Infection: A serious complication that can lead to vision loss or even loss of the eye.
• Glaucoma: Increased pressure within the eye, which can damage the optic nerve.
• Cataracts: Clouding of the lens, which can impair vision.
• Vision loss: If the prolapse is not treated promptly or if complications develop.
Prevention of Iris Prolapse
• Eye protection: Wear safety glasses when engaging in activities that could cause eye injury.
• Prompt treatment of eye injuries: Seek immediate medical attention for any eye injury.
• Regular eye exams: To detect and treat eye conditions early.
• Iris prolapse is a serious eye condition that requires prompt medical attention.
• Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and preserve vision.
