What is ectopia lentis ?
When the normal Crystalline Lens displace from it normal position is called ectopia lentis.
Ectopia lentis is a very rare eye condition where the lens of your eye is displaced from its normal position. This can seen in one or both eyes.
What Causes Ectopia Lentis ?
- Marfan Syndrome: This is the most frequent association.
- Sulfite oxidase deficiency
- Trauma to the eye
- Inflammation within the eye
- Developmental abnormalities
Types of Ectopia Lentis:
- Superior: The crystalline lens is displaced upwards.
- Inferior: The crystalline lens is displaced downwards.
- Nasal: The crystalline lens is displaced towards the nose.
- Temporal: The crystalline lens is displaced towards the temple.
- Subluxation: The crystalline lens is partially dislocated.
- Luxation: The crystalline lens is completely dislocated.
Symptoms of Ectopia Lentis:
- Blurred vision
- Double vision
- Nearsightedness or farsightedness
- Astigmatism
- Sensitivity to light
- Headaches
- Pain in the eye
Complications of Ectopia Lentis:
- Cataracts: The displaced lens can become cloudy.
- Glaucoma: Increased pressure within the eye.
- Retinal detachment: The retina can become detached from the back of the eye.
- Uveitis: Inflammation within the eye.
Diagnosis of Ectopia Lentis:
- Comprehensive eye exam: Including a dilated eye exam and visual acuity tests.
- Slit-lamp examination: A detailed examination of the eye using a specialized microscope.
- Ultrasound: To assess the position and condition of the lens.
Treatment of Ectopia Lentis:
Treatment focuses on managing the symptoms and complications. Options may include:
- Eyeglasses or contact lenses: To correct refractive errors.
- Medications: To control eye pressure or inflammation.
- Lens replacement surgery: To remove the dislocated lens and replace it with an artificial lens implant.
